Sjt Stripes So here it is, the third and final part of Matt Hart’s ‘Chaos Rising’ EP series and we are in for a real treat! While the two previous releases in the trilogy start off slowly with atmospheric opening tracks that are gradually building tension, part three really means business and opens to the thundering beat of ‘Mechanical Dominion’, complete with Hart’s signature distorted vocals proclaiming ‘I am the Machine of Control’. Stirring stuff indeed!

Overall this has to be Matt Hart’s most consistent offering yet and it is a real struggle to name a favourite from the five compositions that close the trilogy (never mind the four bonuses, which I shall ignore in this review despite their quality). In fact I could have easily picked any of the first three tracks on this EP. Hard pushed, thanks to Bandcamp’s policy of listing a favourite, I finally decided on ‘Left for Dead’, mainly because I felt that this song was a slightly different direction for Matt Hart, but one I would definitely like him to explore further on future releases. The addition of heavy rhythm guitar and vicious - almost snarling - vocals really deliver over that pounding electronic beat.

Overall the only part of the EP that I’m slightly unsure of is the actual ending. Instead of leaving us with a thundering statement to emphasise the victory of the machines or a even a reference back to the solemnity of the ‘In Flanders Fields’ outro of the first EP, the track merely fades out. The fact that Matt generally doesn’t end his recordings like this may suggest more: symbolism for the never ending reign of the victorious machines or maybe even a musical return to the world of Chaos Rising in the not too distant future (we can but hope). I’m certainly glad to have been along for the ride. Favorite track: Left For Dead.
